Cleaning (Prophylaxis)

Dental cleanings are performed in Dr. Walker’s office by our wonderful team of dental hygienists with a caring and friendly attitude. Dental cleanings not only remove plaque but also calcified plaque, often called “calculus,” “tartar,” or “build-up.” Calculus cannot be removed at home with a toothbrush because it is so hardened, making it necessary to be cleaned by a hygienist to have it removed.

Dental cleanings have traditionally been recommended every six months, but at Dr. Walker’s office we believe in tailoring each patient’s care to their individual needs. Some patients may need a cleaning every three or four months while others may only need one cleaning a year – we don’t base our care on what has been done traditionally, but rather on what is best for each of our patients!

If the thought of dental cleanings is frightening to you, please ask about our options to reduce anxiety during your cleaning, including the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to relieve your stress and have an enjoyable dental visit.
