Take The Time To Floss

flossing

While most adults would not readily admit it, many people do not floss their teeth as thoroughly or as often as they should. It is often thought that brushing multiple times a day is enough; however, developing a regular flossing routine and sticking to it offers many benefits and can even help prevent certain health conditions.

One of the obvious benefits of flossing is the decreased risk of developing gum disease and tooth decay. Flossing reaches surfaces between the teeth that are often missed by brushing. Using a proper technique that gently reaches below the gum line can also remove bacteria and plaque in areas that are hard to reach. The other benefit to removing bacteria and food particles from these places is that doing so can improve breath freshness.
Less Buildup

Having buildup accumulate between the teeth can cause discomfort and soreness due to increased pressure. Regularly removing pressure that may be caused by food particles and compounded plaque can decrease discomfort and the occurrence of bleeding gums. Removing buildup can also help whiten teeth by preventing discoloration from forming between teeth.
Prevent Systemic Diseases

The bacteria that inhabit a mouth that is not properly maintained can also lead to other illnesses in the body. Researchers have particularly discovered a potential link between oral health and specific diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, which can be life-threatening. While flossing only takes a few minutes each day, the benefit of eliminating potentially harmful bacteria that may have the potential to contribute to serious illnesses is well worth the time investment.
Finding the Time

When implementing flossing as a daily habit, being thorough is key. Therefore, it is not necessary to floss several times a day if the floss is used quickly and superficially. Establishing a nighttime routine that includes slowly and gently flossing between each tooth is more beneficial than multiple flossing sessions throughout the day that do not achieve the objective of plaque and food particle removal between the teeth and below the gum line. Another benefit to establishing a routine is that by flossing at the same time each day, the practice becomes a programmed habit and remembering to do it becomes effortless. Overall, flossing is a habit that has far more advantages than costs and should be a daily practice in every adult and child’s life.
